The Research Behind Our Technology

Groundbreaking Research
Led by Lilla Dale McManis, PhD., the mission of this Department is critical to the development of quality educational technology.
- Ensuring the strongest research-basis possible
- Testing technology in an empirical manner to determine usability and efficacy
- Delivering unique research contributions to the ECE field

The Research Behind Every Detail
During the planning stages of all products, comprehensive literature reviews are conducted to gather knowledge which is then used in the development of each product. We look for current and rigorously conducted research in areas including:
- child development
- early childhood education
- learning theory
- motivation theory
- approaches to learning
- school readiness and school success
- content areas
- best practices in educational technology
Tested for Usability and Efficacy
We ensure all products are tested in an empirical manner to determine usability and efficacy. Once products are ready, they are thoroughly field-tested both in classrooms and in the on-site observation room, we like to call “The Nest,” with observation protocols and analyses. This information is incorporated into the development of the product. When products have been in the field for an amount of time to become established, outcome-based efficacy studies are conducted to determine effectiveness.
Supporting Ongoing Field Research
We share the most relevant information in the field and make unique contributions to the larger early childhood and educational technology research and practice community. We engage in a number of regular activities within these spaces, including publishing in journals, presenting at conferences, serving on review panels and collaboratives, co-guiding the Hatch Webinar series, blogging, and participating in social media discussions and activities.
