Before Upgrading

Why do I want to upgrade?

We added centralized data collection and reporting in the Hatch Report Management System (RMS) to the full year of research based activities that build school readiness skills and drive improved outcomes. iStartSmart 2.0 provides:

  • Convenient access to child progress data using an internet browser from any computer
  • Ability for children to play on any iStartSmart computers and iStartSmart Mobile tablets with their progress and skill level known automatically on each system
  • Visibility to school level data to review skill progression over time and across classes
  • Utilization data at your fingertips – know who is leveraging the tools provided
  • Links to our new Hatch Learning Management System (LMS) and Training videos
What should I know before I upgrade?

Your current data in iStartSmart will not be transferred to RMS. It remains on the computer and can be accessed using Shell Squad Games 1.0 from the Start menu.

If you have iStartSmart Mobile tablets that children are using, their skill levels and progression data has been collected into RMS and will be pushed automatically to the AIO computer after you upgrade and open Shell Squad Games.

If you do not have iStartSmart Mobile tablets, after you upgrade you will need to:

  • Add Classrooms and Children to the system again.
  • Reconfigure any customized Launch Pads you had created under ECLaunch.
  • All children will begin at the Tutorial level.

You can wait to perform this upgrade until after the end of the school year for convenience and to eliminate concerns about children having to start at Tutorial level.

You cannot undo this upgrade once completed.

How will I receive the upgrade?

After Hatch receives and processes your request, we will send you an email with a link to download the upgrade, a unique product key and instructions. You simply copy the link to the browser on your iStartSmart Computer, which will download the installer program and then you click run so the installer executes. The installer software will prompt you with some questions so it can configure and automatically update your system.

Can I preview screenshots of the installation instructions?
How long will it take to upgrade my system?

The upgrade takes less than 10 minutes.

Can I wait to upgrade?

Yes, just retain the email with the upgrade link in it with the product key. You can access the link at any time. Or, you can download the Upgrade software to your iStartSmart AIO computer and run it later by double clicking on it.

Data Considerations

Will all my data automatically be transferred to the new Report Management System (RMS) for me?

Your current data on the iStartSmart AIO computer, including child progression data and archives, will remain on the computer. It will not be transferred to the RMS central database and will not be visible in RMS or in Shell Squad Games 2.0 after you upgrade. You can still access the data on the AIO computer by using the prior version of Shell Squad Games that also remains on the computer. Access to Shell Squad Games 1.0 is from the Start Menu, under the Hatch folder.

However, if you also have iStartSmart Mobile tablets, and both the Mobile tablets and AIO computer are assigned to the same class, then after you upgrade the AIO computer, and start Shell Squad Games 2.0, data already stored in the RMS as a result of using the iStartSmart Mobile tablets will be downloaded to the AIO computer automatically. This is part of the normal synchronization of data between the devices used by the teachers and children and the RMS centralized database.

I have iStartSmart Mobile Tablets that my children have been using. Will their data in RMS be transferred to the iStartSmart AIO computer after I upgrade it to 2.0?

Yes, data already in the RMS will be downloaded to the iStartSmart AIO computer after you upgrade to 2.0 and both the AIO and the tablet are assigned to the same class. This is part of the normal synchronization of data between the devices used by the teachers and children and the RMS centralized database.

After I upgrade, how do I access my current child progress data and archive data?

Your current child progress data and archives are still on the AIO computer.

To access child progress data and archives you will need to start the prior version of Shell Squad Games which is still installed on your computer and go to the Teacher or Administrator area as you normally would.

To start the prior version – Shell Squad Games 1.0, go to the Start Menu (lower left corner) and click on it or touch it. Select “All Programs”, then “Hatch”. You will see 2 line items: Shell Squad Games and Shell Squad Games 2.0. Select “Shell Squad Games”. This will start the program and you can go to the Teacher Menu by hitting CTL-Shift-T. This will allow you to see the children progress data.

To view the archives, you will need to login as the Administrator.

Troubleshooting

I upgraded my computer and started Shell Squad Games and it is displaying a message box.

A message box that says that no children are added and a menu with items: Add Child, Edit Child,….

  • You will need to either add children to your class or edit children that you added into RMS and they do not have photos yet. There is a handy video to help you: Link to the video “Add Children” (or the icon for the video)

A message box that says your device is not registered….

  • Call our Technical Support team and they will help you register the computer or you can use the system in a demo mode by selecting the first option in the menu.
What will be different after I upgrade? What will I notice?
